Tool- and Menu Bar inside Title Bar

I do not know how complex this is or if even possible at all. More and more apps (e.g. Office, Firefox) offer a more compact view with menu/toolbars inside the title bar, some Screenshots.

Mac Users may not have to deal with menu bars everywhere but windows and linux users share the same problem with multiple open windows and lost vertical display size. This is even more worse when the menu or toolbars have only some menus or icons, leaving the remaining space blank.

Thanks, this is a reasonable suggestion. Similar compact header arrangements are available in IDEs such as Rider and Visual Studio, and Avalonia provides the underlying window support we would need.

It is more involved than simply moving the existing controls, however. Studio’s toolbar would need a responsive compact design, and we would need to preserve keyboard access, accessibility, window dragging and standard window controls. Linux support will also require careful testing across different desktop environments.

My problem with a title bar like this is that there is almost no room for clicking the title bar in order to drag the window to another location on the screen(s).

PaulS I run into this alot on my Windows Server work machine. When there are a lot of tabs open it's hard to find someplace to grab the window to move it around without accidentally closing a tab or the app itself. I've gotten practiced at it, but it is an annoyance.

Possibly there could be some space reserved for this purpose, to make sure everything doesn't crowd out some sort of "handle". Maybe its size could be an inspector property or something. Just off the top of my head.

On most linux distros pressing the meta key allows you to clic anywhere on the window to drag it. Nothing similar on windows ?

Ormente Not that I'm aware of. I just tried Command / Windows, Option / Alt, Control, and shifted versions of all. No joy. Same for Shift-Ctrl-Option, etc.

Caveat -- this is WIndows Server, not Windows 11, but I doubt it's different there.

bgrommes For several years now, I have only used Windows very rarely... I just had a vague memory of this trick to get out of a situation where the title bar of a window is off-screen. It's a system feature, the one your link mention (Sorry, I misremembered the D key instead of the M key).

Ormente I have only used Windows Server for work (RDP via Azure) and probably 80% of the time I'm maintaining services or command line code so I don't stress the GUI as much as I might. Apart from work, I haven't had a personal Windows machine in many years myself (I literally just bought one largely to facilitate Objo testing and because I might find it less cranky at running Linux VMs than Apple Silicon sometimes is -- and as a hedge against the RAMpocalypse).

I had also forgotten this method of moving windows when the title bar is out of reach (or full of controls). But thanks for mentioning it -- the reminder is definitely helpful to me.
