Random crash after saving solution

Summary

I had just finished editing a method and hit Cmd+S to save the solution. I think I may have just hit the first keystroke to edit another method when Objo crashed.

Tried to upload/attach the MacOS dump but I'm ... not allowed to attached a text file?? It's too big for a 64K post.

The just-finished method was intact when I relaunched Objo Studio.

I can't think of anything out of the ordinary I had been doing in Objo or elsewhere.

I've had some very infrequent crashes just as I select 'Documentation' and also when the autofill comes up. I've tried to pinpoint or re-produce on demand, but have not been successful.

Garry I'll send the original dump to your contact email. I think it's somewhere in the dump but total app uptime was fairly high. My current time is 100% in the command line app space.

Thanks. I’ve examined the crash report.

It confirms that Studio terminated because of an unhandled .NET exception on the main UI thread. Unfortunately, the macOS report omits the exception type and managed stack trace, so it cannot identify the exact cause. The save itself completed successfully, and the crash may instead have been triggered by the following keystroke, autocomplete, or another queued UI update.

Studio records the missing information in:

~/Library/Application Support/Objo Studio/crash.log

Could you please email me that file? Please retrieve it before another crash, because Studio overwrites it each time.

Perfect! The log contains exactly what I needed, and I’ve identified the cause.

The crash was not caused by saving. An autocomplete method-call snippet retained a caret position from the method you had just edited. After you moved to a shorter method, the first subsequent keypress caused Studio to restore that old position (offset 368 in a document only 204 characters long) which triggered the crash.

I can reproduce the sequence from the stack trace and will fix Studio so active autocomplete snippets are safely deactivated whenever the editor changes methods or documents.

Until the fix is released, pressing Escape to dismiss an active parameter-placeholder snippet before switching methods should avoid the crash.

Garry This is the first time in 44 years as a developer that I have actually had a diagnosis and fix on a random crash, much less in under 24 hours. Whether that says more about your careful engineering or about the general state of software development, I leave as an exercise for the reader. Kudos!
