Web Viewport width greater than 1280

For people with wider screens, the Viewport width of 1280 is a bit small. Would it make sense to add another Viewport option, or a custom width Viewport, or even have the control automatically fill the width based on the browser width?

BTW - The new feature to fill the remaining browser height works great!

Thanks Pete, glad the height option is working well!

The 1280px value is the designer’s Wide preview width. The running page currently has a centred 1200px width limit, so a larger preview alone wouldn’t let the application use more space.

I’ve logged a feature request to add a Page width setting with two choices:

Contained: the current centred layout, which will remain the default.
Full width: use the available browser width while keeping some padding at the edges.

This will be a per-page choice, so you could have a full-width dashboard and contained settings pages in the same application. The existing three breakpoints will stay, with the same grid columns expanding to use the extra room.

I’ll also add adjustable designer preview width so you can check the layout at widths such as 1440px or 1920px, with a fit-to-view option for larger previews.

Hi Gary - thanks for taking this on. One question - Would this allow for another viewport option for anything over 1280? For instance, if I have 3 rows of 2 charts at 1280, could I have 2 rows of 3 charts for anything above 1280 or would it make the 3 rows of 2 charts larger?

Hi Pete, with the change I’ve currently proposed, your three rows of two charts would stay arranged that way, with each chart getting more horizontal space.

To switch to two rows of three charts above 1280px, you’d need an additional layout breakpoint where you could arrange them differently. The adjustable preview width would let you inspect a wider layout, but wouldn’t add that breakpoint.

I can see why that would be useful for dashboards. It’s a separate enhancement from the full-width page feature I’ve logged, which keeps the existing Compact, Medium and Wide layouts.

As a dashboard is exactly what I'm thinking about. I'd like to create a web app that is a dashboard showing sales comparisons, trends etc. for our sales team that they can look at from their desks with wide screen monitors or their laptops or phones when they are on the road. I currently have a webapp using X... that kind of works using the 'Resized' event, but would like to port it over to Objo as it handles the breakpoints, etc. for different screens for me. If the additional layout breakpoint is more difficult and could be much later down the road, then your current proposal is my second choice.

Thanks Pete, I’ve looked into this further and logged a feature request for an optional Extra wide layout.

The plan is to let you choose the browser width at which that layout takes over for each page. You could keep two charts per row in Wide, then arrange three per row in Extra wide, while retaining your layouts for smaller screens. Objo would handle switching between them automatically.

Extra wide would initially reuse the Wide arrangement, so you’d only customise it on pages where you need something different. It would work alongside Full width: one controls the available space, the other controls the arrangement.

I’ve captured your dashboard example in the request so the intended behaviour is clear.
